UAPD seeking theft suspect

The University of Arizona Police Department alerted the campus community yesterday about a thief who targets open, unoccupied offices during the day.

Police believe a man they arrested two years ago is responsible for a string of thefts that have occurred in the science buildings on the campus' southwest side over the past two months, said Sgt. Sal Celi.

"When we compared the suspect information of victims and witnesses from recent thefts, it fit our guy," Celi said. "We believe he may be active again."

The man police are looking for is a 30- to 35-year-old white male with brown hair and dark eyes. He is about 250 pounds and 6-foot 7 inches tall, which Celi said should help locate him.

"I think he'll stick out," he said, adding that he also has tattoos on his back and upper right arm.

Police would not release the man's name yesterday.

Celi said the thief likes to find small items of value, like calculators, pagers and wallets in desk drawers of easily accessible unlocked offices not normally open to the public.
