Briefly

Two former Arizona State basketball players have pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit sports bribery in a federal investigation of point-shaving at the university, the Arizona Republic reported yesterday.

The newspaper, citing unidentified sources, said the plea agreements by Stevin ''Hedake'' Smith and Isaac Burton would be announced today.

The Republic also said indictments would be announced against gambler Joseph Gagliano Jr., a Phoenix investment adviser and former trader on the Chicago Board of Trade, and Benny Silman, a former partner in a cappuccino stand at America West Arena. Silman's attorney, Joseph Chornenky, said his client has not been told that an indictment was being handed down.

Allegations have swirled for months around Smith, the No. 2 scorer in school history, and Burton, his former teammate. Several news reports cited sources saying the two are believed to have taken payoffs from a gambler and bookmaker in the 1993-94 season.

By the Numbers

13:

Appearance the women's volleyball team is making in the NCAA Tournament tomorrow. Stanford (17), UCLA (16) and USC (15) are the only Pac-10 teams that have more and only 10 other teams nationally have participated in more. The 10th-ranked Wildcats open tournament play against Mid-Continental Conference champion Oral Roberts at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in Boulder, Colo.

Arizona is hitting .232 and is on pace to break the single-season team record of .225 set in 1983.
