Diaper dandies

Bobby Rich and Brad Behan of Bobby and Brad's Morning Show for 94.9 MIX-FM broadcast live to show support at last Friday's kick-off of the month long 1997 December Diaper Drive.

The sun rose over the offices of Resolve Inc. on chilly Dec. 5. The air was filled with the smell of doughnuts and the sound of the Utterback Magnet Middle School Jazz Band.

In some states it snows in December, but the forecast here called for diapers.

Aside from solely collecting diapers at this year's diaper drive, a donation jar is placed out and gradually fills to gather money to buy diapers for the drive.

The third annual December Diaper Drive kicked off as cars started to pull over and drop off diapers during the drive to work. Some drivers took a minute to enjoy a warm cup of hot chocolate.

The drive expected to raise 150,000 diapers for Casa de los Niños and the Tucson Indian and Pio Decimo centers. All three local nonprofit organizations help low income families and children. Between the three companies, 415 diapers are needed each day and 2,905 diapers are needed each week.

Twelve-year-old Lizzie Sam, student representative from Vail Middle School, struggles to handle a generous donation.

More than 100,000 diapers were donated last year.

Bobby Rich and Brad Behan, 94.9 MIX FM's morning personalities, broadcasted live from the scene as the Arizona Rose Theater company sang Christmas carols. MIX-FM is co-sponsoring the drive.

Congressman Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., even stopped by to grab a doughnut and show his support.

And the diapers poured in.

The Arizona Rose Theatre Company joins in at the event by singing Christmas carols and keeping everyone in the spirit despite the cold weather.

Every few minutes, the number seemed to double, as a host of eager volunteers collected diapers. Anyone interested in volunteering can call 321-4433 for more information.
