By Kristy Mangos Diaper dandies
In some states it snows in December, but the forecast here called for diapers.
The third annual December Diaper Drive kicked off as cars started to pull over and drop off diapers during the drive to work. Some drivers took a minute to enjoy a warm cup of hot chocolate. The drive expected to raise 150,000 diapers for Casa de los Niños and the Tucson Indian and Pio Decimo centers. All three local nonprofit organizations help low income families and children. Between the three companies, 415 diapers are needed each day and 2,905 diapers are needed each week.
More than 100,000 diapers were donated last year. Bobby Rich and Brad Behan, 94.9 MIX FM's morning personalities, broadcasted live from the scene as the Arizona Rose Theater company sang Christmas carols. MIX-FM is co-sponsoring the drive. Congressman Jim Kolbe, R-Ariz., even stopped by to grab a doughnut and show his support. And the diapers poured in.
Every few minutes, the number seemed to double, as a host of eager volunteers collected diapers. Anyone interested in volunteering can call 321-4433 for more information. Kristy Mangos is the Arizona Daily Wildcat's photography intern. This photo essay is her final project.
