By John Brown Police BeatA Tucson man was arrested on drunken driving charges just north of campus Wednesday night. University police were stopped at a red light behind a late-model GMC Jimmy on North Campbell Avenue and East Speedway Boulevard just before 11 p.m. When the light turned green, the truck waited about five seconds before proceeding through the intersection, police reports stated. According to reports, the truck continued north on Campbell, swerving between lanes several times before officers stopped the vehicle near East Elm Street. The driver, Gilbert Felix Gutierrez, 36, of the 1300 Block of East Dewet Drive, gave police his license but did not give officers his insurance and registration after several requests, reports stated. Gutierrez admitted he had imbibed a few beers that night and consented to field sobriety tests, reports stated. He was taken to UAPD headquarters where breath tests yielded blood-alcohol levels of .166 and .163, reports stated. Gutierrez was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and DUI with a BAC of .10 or higher. He was also given a traffic citation for failure to drive in one lane and then released to a third party. An employee reported Wednesday that more than a $1,000 worth of international phone calls had been charged to her supervisor's account at the UA Medical Library, 1501 E. Campbell Ave. The employee told university police the 37 unauthorized calls, to places as far away as France, Tunisia and the Ivory Coast, were made from a public phone in the library's foyer. The culprit used the long-distance access code of the supervisor to make the calls between Nov. 6 and 29. Police are investigating the use of the code.
University police warned two adult-aged skateboarders Wednesday night after they were seen trick riding at the Harvill Building, 1103 E. Second St. The officer spotted a 24-year-old man and 22-year-old female student "hot dogging" at 9:40 p.m. near the building's west patio. The skaters were told future infractions of the university's no "hot dogging" policy could result in charges of criminal trespassing or disrupting the peaceful conduct of an educational institution, as well as the confiscation of their skateboards, police reports stated. Both skaters left the area without incident. University police Thursday investigated a transient camp site at the UA's Tumamoc Hill Desert Laboratory, 1700 W. Anklam Road. Officers went up the hill Thursday morning and found two mattresses, a large pile of trash and an erected mountain tent. No one was around. Police suspect the cold weather may have deterred camp members from the site. In another area of the property, police found a homeless woman at the Anklam and West St. Mary's Road underpass. Officers left a warning notice at the camp site along with local homeless shelter information. A woman's 1969 Corvette convertible was vandalized, then burglarized in Lot 6098 Wednesday night while she was walking on the UA Mall. The woman told police she parked the blue and purple Corvette in the lot, at the northwest corner of Enke Drive and North Campbell Avenue, at 7 p.m. She briefly returned to the vehicle at 8 p.m. When she returned again at 9 p.m., the car's vinyl top was slashed in two places and several body panels had been scratched. The message, "Fuck U," was scrawled on the car's trunk. The woman told police her $300 JVC stereo, $180 radar detector and antenna of unknown value were gone. A student reported Thursday that his checkbook may have been stolen by an unknown singing man seen wandering through the Kappa Alpha fraternity house, 906 N. First Ave. A second resident of the house told university police he had encountered an unfamiliar man who said he was visiting a friend. He told police the man went into a restroom and started singing. When the first student went to his room, he discovered his dresser drawer open and his checkbook missing, reports stated. The student told police he went to the restroom and found his change dish, a box of condoms and postage stamps from his room in the restroom. The man was not found.
