By Tom Collins Police BeatA 24-year-old Tucson man was arrested on multiple charges yesterday after leading university police on a half-mile bicycle chase. An officer spotted Jan E. Leanderson, of the 1700 block of East Glenn Road, riding his bike west on East Seventh Street without a light at 3:43 a.m. and peeping into parked cars, reports stated. The officer turned on his flashing lights and attempted to pull Leanderson over, but Leanderson looked back at the officers and continued riding, police reports stated. The officer turned on his siren, and used his public address system to order Leanderson to stop, but he continued peddling, ducking into an alley south of East Sixth Street, reports stated. The officer and another cruiser blocked Leanderson's path when he turned north onto North Euclid Avenue. Leanderson tried to jump a curb, fell off his bike, then resisted police when they tried to get him under control, reports stated. Leanderson pushed his bike at the officers and wrestled with officers as they sprayed him with pepper spray, according to reports. Leanderson was finally handcuffed and arrested on charges of assault, failing to stop at a stop sign, riding without a headlight, failing to stop for a visual or audible signal, resisting arrest, and failure to obey a police officer. He was booked into the Pima County Jail. Leanderson's bicycle was placed into evidence and police found no cars damaged along East Seventh Street.
