Sidelines

Long before Arnold Schwarzenegger even lifted his first 10 pounds, a woman was pioneering the field of physical fitness and healthy living.

Bonnie Prudden first stressed the importance of physical education in schools back in 1946 before going on to form the President's Council on Youth Fitness during the Eisenhower administration.

She formed the American Foundation for the Blind as well as the Bonnie Prudden Pain Erasure School which moved to Tucson in 1992.

Saturday, Prudden will be honored for her countless contributions to the exercise and health care fields as she turns 84 years-young.

As a tribute to her visionary work, UA women athletes will be honored in her name.

Several of UA's Wildcat women will be on hand to celebrate Prudden's on-going commitment to healthy living.

Not only was Prudden the first person to write fitness columns for Sports Illustrated and produce master fitness albums, but this expert rock climber developed the non-invasive system of muscle pain relief known as myotherapy. The pain therapy has been used successfully by many patients including the Oakland Athletics' professional baseball team and a medical director at General Motors.

Briefly

Chocolate. Vanilla. Wildcat Crunch?

Shamrock Farms just introduced a brand new flavor ice cream - Wildcat Crunch - in honor of the University of Arizona.

The flavor, which was served for dessert at a Lute Olson luncheon on Jan. 15, is described as having "a praline and cream type taste," according to Phoebe Chalk, UA's assistant athletic director for public relations and special events.

Following the initial taste test, Shamrock announced that for every half gallon sold through Jan. 31, fifty cents of the proceeds will go to the Wildcat Scholarship Fund, which helps pay scholarships for Arizona athletes.

By the Numbers

.549:

The three-point shooting percentage for UA women's basketball player Monika Crank. The 5-foot-7 junior guard is currently ranked first in the nation for three-point field goal shooting.
