New members approved for Ariz. Board of Regents

PHOENIX - The state Senate yesterday confirmed Gov. Jane Hull's two appointees to the Arizona Board of Regents, making the universities' governing board both all white and all Republican.

Chris Herstam and Jack Jewett were appointed by the governor in December to fill the seats vacated by Tucson lawyer Art Chapa and Phoenix grocery store magnate Eddie Basha, whose terms expired this year.

Chapa and Basha are Democrats and Chapa is Hispanic.

Both Jewett, 50, and his former legislative ally Herstam, 48, a lobbyist for the Phoenix law firm Lewis and Roca, built strong working relationships with Hull, a Republican, when they served as majority whips while she was Speaker of the House.

Jewett, who graduated from the University of Arizona in 1969 with a sociology degree, said earlier this month he anticipates burgeoning enrollment figures and resource battles as hot spots on the board's upcoming agenda.

Herstam received bachelor's and master's degrees in secondary education at Arizona State University in 1971 and 1972.

Neither was on hand for the vote.
