Sidelines

Faced with their first losing season ever and no postseason appearance, the Arizona Icecats hit the road for the next three weeks needing wins.

First up for the Icecats (9-10-1) is Delaware tonight and Towson State Saturday.

Arizona is ranked 11th in the country, three spots away from qualifying for the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament. Only the top eight teams in the country go to nationals.

In order for the Wildcats to squeak in, the Icecats need to sweep this weekend's trip and hope that seventh-ranked Minot State is disqualified from playing in the tournament. Plus, at least one other team in front of UA also has to lose.

Going into Delaware, though, won't be easy. The Icecats lost to the then-No. 10 Blue Hens 3-2 before blowing a 4-1 lead in their second game, which ended in a 5-5 tie, two weeks ago in Tucson.

Briefly

The Icecats get next weekend off before an away game against the Colorado Buffaloes.

Arizona's final home games are against ASU on Feb. 20 and 21.

The Arizona Rugby team, who has never lost a game in the Domino's Invitational, will host the three-year-old event at Estevan Park Saturday.

This year the Wildcats (4-1, 1-1) invited Arizona State and Brigham Young to play a round-robin schedule. UA meets the Sun Devils at 10 a.m. in the first contest and Brigham Young at 3:45. ASU plays the Cougars at 1 p.m.

"ASU lost both conference games they have played by more than 20 points each time," UA head coach Dave Sitton said. "They have a new coach in Brad Filgas and they are trying to put the pieces together, but they still have a ways to go."

Arizona will to try to extend its six-game winning streak against its rivals from the north. In the team's last meeting, a game played at Estevan Park last year, UA won 33-7.

The Wildcats lead the all-time series with ASU, 32-12-1.

By the Numbers

12-0:

The men's basketball team's record when they score 90 points or more. Arizona is averaging 96 points per Pac-10 contest.
