UPS driver hit by paint bomb

A United Parcel Service driver was ambushed yesterday at North Park Avenue and East University Boulevard when someone threw a paint bomb through the driver's side door of his truck.

Jose Miranda said he was driving his van south on Park Avenue about 9:35 a.m. when a small orange object was tossed into the truck and exploded near the left side of his head.

"I was driving, so he was a good shot, I'll tell you what," Miranda said yesterday.

Miranda said he believed the object was launched by someone waiting at the bus stop near the intersection.

He walked into university police headquarters about 9:45 to report the incident and was treated for a cut on his cheek as he wiped orange paint from his hands with a paper towel.

The inside of the UPS truck Miranda was driving had traces of orange paint splattered above the driver's seat and on the floor.

University police Cmdr. Brian Seastone said the incident was classified as an assault.

"Hopefully they'll catch them, they could have hurt someone," Miranda said. "They're lucky I didn't catch them."
