The PGA Tour's Tucson stop opened yesterday in heavy rain as 10 tour players competed in the Tucson Chrysler Classic's Air Touch Cellular One Shootout.

The event was scheduled for nine holes with one player being eliminated after each hole, but because of the rain the players formed five, two-man teams and played holes 10, 11 and 12. Two teams were eliminated after the 10th hole along with one team each after the 11th and 12th holes.

John Daly and Billy Mayfair won the event thanks to Mayfair's sudden-death bunker shot to within about eight feet of the hole on the par-3, 170-yard 12th hole. Daly and Mayfair defeated former Arizona golfer Don Pooley and Larry Mize.

Also competing in the event were last year's tournament winner Jeff Sluman and his partner Billy Andrade, former Wildcat Jim Furyk and his teammate Jay Delsing and Andrew Magee and country singer Vince Gill.

Gill will serve as host of today's Celebrity Pro-Am, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Celebrity tee times start at noon.

Weather permitting, the PGA Pros will begin first-round play Thursday morning.
