To the editor,

In wake of the recent binge of false identification busts, I would like to retort to these arrests and in particular address the University of Arizona Police Department's proclamation "If they want to turn in, they are more than welcome to, because eventually we are going to find them."

Hasn't anybody learned that no matter how many kids perish from alcohol-related incidents, college students' life and drinking will forever be intimately intertwined? The detectives are very proud of citing a whopping 12 students for possession of false identification. My guess is that there is at least 5,000 students at the UA with fakes. This ridiculous ploy will not stop them from consuming large amounts of alcohol. Nor will the insidious strategy of utilizing a few students (sell-outs in my opinion) as their eyes and ears to "get tips" curb the mass consumption of alcohol. Taking a fake ID from someone is as temporary a solution as bombing Yugoslavia is. Both will rise out of the drama to do their will, for where there is a will there is a multitude of ways and you cannot break the will of a person to drink.

I commend the UA Police Department on doing their job, but the task of obviating underage drinking is a tireless, unachievable utopia. So I say, just give up for you will never prevail, and I should hope there are more demanding issues at hand - in addition, it will save both students and the department alike time and money.
