Gee mommy, can I pet the carnies? You'll get your chance at the Pima County Fair April 8-18 out at 11300 S. Houghton Road. A plethora of rides, livestock and performers will be at this year's fair, like Rusty Zinn and Joan Jett. Admission is $6 for anyone over the age of 11, whereas everyone else can go for free. Parking is $2 per car. Call 792-3930 to get the best cotton candy.

Lions, tigers and bears, oh my! No, it's not some fearful NFL fan, it's the "Wizard of Oz." This week's Midnight Special at Gallagher Theatre features the adventures of Dorothy and her friends tonight and tomorrow for $2.50. The soundtrack will be normal Thursday, and with the music of Pink Floyd Friday. Follow the Yellow Brick Road to 621-4678 and tell them the Lollipop Guild sent you.

Watch out for exploding footwear! Shoebomb and The Simplistics are fresh from a great trip to SXSW and are coming to Club Congress, 311 E. Congress, at 9 p.m. Lush Budget presents the Les Payne Product will be opening. The Simplistics will be celebrating the release of their new CD, Beautiful Me, with a $5 show. Forget all those stereotypes of prisoners being gritty, shower-loving criminals. At the annual "Prisoners are People Day," poet Richard Shelton will talk about the 25 years he has spent teaching inmates at the Arizona State Prison. Shelton will speak at 11 a.m. in Armory Park, and the event runs from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Call Julieta Gonzales at 626-4336 if your parole officer says it's okay.

The Tucson Guitar Society presents Benjamin Verdery in a concert showcasing classical guitar solos. This "American master" will play Holsclaw Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for students, and $15 for all those other people. 519-8270 will give you all the musical messages.

No, this guy would not like any help scratching his back, thank you. He would like you to come see him perform in Margaret Jenkins Dance Company's Breathe Normally, however.

Inhale, exhale, do a little dance. UAPresents brings the Arizona premiere of the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company dance/theater work, Breathe Normally. This show focuses on the fragmentary nature of memory, and starts at 8 p.m. at Centennial Hall. Tickets range $28-16 and are half price for students. Call 621-3341 for more info.

Even though I finally learned what a didgeridoo is, I'm not so sure what an Indian raga is. Sanjaya and Allan Shockley will be groovin' away with both of them in the SSCI Auditorium at 8 p.m. Tickets to this international fOte are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The work of 13 MFA candidates will be showcased at a Public Reception from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. at the UA Museum of Art and adjacent Gross Gallery. Your chance to see books on wheels and X-rated cartoons for free, and 621-7567 can help you be more cultured.

It's not every day you get to see "a postmodern organ trio with a difference." But at 8 p.m. at Rialto Theatre it will be your lucky day because Medeski, Martin and Wood will perform one acoustic and one electric set. Guess what? This calendar is being brought to you by the wonderful invention of paper! Karen Stahlecker knows paper, which is why she'll be giving a lecture on her 20 years' experience in papermaking at UA Museum of Art at 1 p.m. Reception will follow.
