Bridge will delay Tucson-Phoenix trips
UA students planning a trip to Phoenix this weekend also need to plan for traffic delays, as workers perform maintenance on Interstate 10's Gila River bridge.
Construction crews began repairs last night and will work around the clock until about 8:30 p.m. Sunday to replace joint assemblies on the westbound bridge south of Sun Lakes, state Department of Transportation officials said.
Drivers headed toward Phoenix will have to exit I-10 at Casa Blanca Road, near milepost 175, and take Arizona 587 to Riggs Road, which returns to the interstate near milepost 167. State Department of Public Safety officers will control traffic at each intersection to expedite the detour, officials said.
Crews last month replaced the joints on the eastbound bridge, and no eastbound delays are expected this weekend on the return trip to Tucson.
State highway officials said the detour, about 70 miles north of Tucson, will add about 15 minutes to westbound travel times.
But Arizona Shuttle Service, which makes 18 trips to Phoenix each day and is commonly used by University of Arizona students without rides to the capitol, is telling its customers to expect a delay of 45 minutes to an hour, a customer service agent said last night.
