Hornbeek returns home after placing 6th, 8th at NCAAs

Arizona redshirt junior Heidi Hornbeek placed sixth on the beam and eighth on the uneven bars at the NCAA Championships in Salt Lake City Saturday.

Hornbeek was named to the All-America first team in both events.

She qualified for the finals after a first place score on the beam and a third place finish on the bars in the preliminary competition. Hornbeek's all-around score of 39.350 in the preliminaries was good enough for seventh best in Arizona history.

The individual event winners were UCLA's Heidi Moneymaker, who took first in vault (9.8625). Utah's Angie Leonard placed first on bars (9.950) and teammate Theresa Kulkowski won top honors on the beam (9.900). Bowling Green's Marny Oestreng rounded out the medalists, taking first in the floor competition (9.925). Georgia won the team title. - staff reports

Softball team gets revenge on Beavers

The Arizona softball team swept Oregon State in a doubleheader yesterday 2-0 and 11-2 in Corvallis, avenging two earlier defeats this season.

The No. 3-ranked Wildcats (40-10 overall, 12-6 Pacific 10 Conference) defeated OSU (39-16, 10-8) behind the bat of sophomore center fielder Nicole Giordano, who was 5 for 5 with four RBI in the second game.

Arizona had split a doubleheader with the Beavers in Tucson and had also lost to OSU in the Kia Klassic tournament in March.

UA freshman pitcher Jennie Finch (19-4) won the second game, giving up only one earned run over seven innings, while sophomore Becky Lemke (21-6) shut the Beavers down in the opener, striking out eight and allowing only six hits and no runs.

UA women's golf team place second

at Pac-10 Championships

The UA women's golf team brought home the silver at the Pacific 10 Conference Championships over the weekend in Stanford, Calif.

The Wildcats finished second yesterday behind the Cardinal, after shooting a three-day team total of 24-over-par 888.

Placing first at the tournament was Stanford, which finished 12-over-par 876. Also placing among the top five were Arizona State, UCLA and Southern Cal.

Leading the Wildcats was freshman Cristina Baena, who was three-over-par 219, and on her heels was junior Jill Gomric who shot a four-over-par 220.

In 14th place, senior Krissie Register and junior Jenna Daniels each scored a nine-over-par 225. Junior Shannon Ingalls snagged 34th place with a finish of 18-over-par 234.

Competing as an individual, Christina Monteiro finished in 11th place with her seven-over-par 223.

Tennis teams derailed at Pac-10 Championships

The UA men's and women's tennis teams fell short over the weekend at the Pacific 10 Conference Championships in Ojai, Calif.

The doubles team of Wildcat senior Monique Allegre and freshman Lindsay Blau advanced to the semifinals, but they fell to the No. 2-nationally ranked Stanford doubles team 6-0, 6-1 Saturday.

In other doubles main draw play, junior Vanessa Abel and sophomore Michelle Gough dropped matches, as did sophomore Joanna Buczkowska and freshman Brooke Taylor in the quarterfinals of doubles invitational draw.

Freshman Carly Stringer and Abel both competed in singles play with similar results.

Three Arizona men's doubles teams opened play Friday, but all suffered losses in the first round.

Junior Jean-Noel Lacoste and senior Pascal Salasca were defeated by Oregon's Guillermo Carter and Bertrand Devillers 9-8. UA juniors Alex Brown and Michel Stopa fell to Stanford's team 6-1, 6-1.

At the invitational draw level, Brown and freshman Caleb Marquardt lost by default to Stanford's Ali Ansari and Vijay Sekhon.- staff reports
