UA freshman midfielder Laurie Bodmer goes up field and gets ready to take a shot against UC-Santa Barbara. The women's lacrosse team finished the season 4-6 and are not sure whether or not they are going to be attending the Western Women's Lacrosse League playoffs.

In the end, the UA women's lacrosse team only had one option entering the weekend;

win, and maybe make the playoffs or lose, and the Wildcats would be out.

So they won, beating UC-San Diego 14-9 on the road Saturday.

"I think the mood was we'd better win," senior midfielder Ellen Higgins said. "There was just basically we win and there's no alternative.

"We're not going to get beat by San Diego."

The Wildcats (4-6) rolled past the Tritons thanks to contributions from several unsung players. Freshman midfielder Laurie Bodmer opened the scoring and sophomore defender Christine Cook added another goal, Higgins said.

But whether or not the Wildcats advance to the playoffs of the Western Women's Lacrosse League for the fifth straight year remains up in the air. Arizona needed UCLA to have lost to UCSD Sunday, but UCLA won and finished 5-5.

UA team captain Maren Henley said, to the best of her knowledge, that the other three teams in the South Division also finished with at least five wins, which would leave Arizona on the outside looking in.

The Wildcats should find out their fate today or tomorrow.
