From staff reports

The Arizona baseball team stumbled a bit in its quest to earn a bid to NCAA Regional play, losing two of three at California this weekend.

The Golden Bears (24-30 overall, 9-12 Pacific 10 Conference) rolled to an 8-2 victory yesterday, bouncing back from a 6-5 loss to Arizona (31-20, 11-10) Saturday.

The Bears also won Friday's contest 4-0, ending a streak of 176 consecutive games in which the Wildcats had not been shut out.

Yesterday's game saw Cal get another stand-out pitching performance, this time from sophomore right-hander Ryan Atkinson (4-7), who held UA to only two runs on four hits while striking out six over 7 1/3 innings.

RBI singles by sophomore shortstop Keoni DeRenne and freshman right fielder Shelley Duncan were all the Wildcats could manage against Atkinson, while Cal freshman designated hitter Derek Ayres hit a three-run homer and sophomore right fielder Rob Meyer hit a two-run homer.

UA junior Mike Crawford (4-5) took the loss yesterday.

Wildcat junior pitcher Tony Milo was the hero Saturday, quelling a Cal rally to pick up his fourth save of the year. He came in after UA freshman starter Ben Diggins (8-4) and junior reliever Mike Meyer gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Milo got Cal sophomore third baseman Xavier Nady to line out to third base to give Arizona the one-run victory.

UA senior second baseman Andy Juday was the star for UA at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three RBI.

Friday's game saw Cal junior righty Jon Shirley (6-4) throw his fifth complete game of the season, completely neutralizing the Wildcats' offense.

Arizona gets a week off before closing out regular season play at Arizona State May 14-16.
