1998-99 record: 23-5-2, fifth at the ACHA Tournament

Head coach Leo Golembiewski's 400th career win stood out in the Arizona Icecats' 20th anniversary season.

It was a typical game for the Icecats during their annual late-January road trip when the final buzzer sounded in the Icecats' 7-2 win over Marquette.

It just happened to be the 400th win for Golembiewski, the only head coach in the history of the Icecat franchise.

"It was a special feeling for me and my team," he said. "It also means I've been here a long, long time."

In goal the night of the win, Jan. 31, was junior Mike Tesi, a player whom, as a boy, was a stickboy for the Icecats' teams of the late 1980s.

"It was great to be in there for Coach G the night of his 400th," Tesi said. "I know it was an important win for him."

Sophomore co-captain Paul Dorn tried to see the bigger picture in the win, emphasizing the charisma and quirks of the "Head Icecat," a man who utilizes such connections as NHL Hall of Famer Bobby Hull to promote Icecat hockey.

"He's a character," Dorn said, laughing. "He's been coaching for 20-25 years. He's a great guy to listen to because he likes to talk."

The Icecats return all but two of their players next year as they seek their second national title.
