Senator responds to student success letter
To the editor,
I read Ms. Aguirre's letter to the editor ("Pay more attention to current UA students," July 7), and she has some really good points about students succeeding in college.
The problem is that all state universities have to admit almost the majority of all Arizona High School Graduates. It has come to the point that there are students in Algebra One, a class that 8th and 9th Graders take. Whether UA Officials call it a Myth or Drop-outs call it a Curse from the gods, there are "WEED OUT classes."
In many intro-level classes, professors impose a Bell-curve. There is no interest to see all students to get A's. That will make the professor look like an "easy A" professor. Professors are more worried about their reputation than teaching!
About ASUA kicking in and helping out - we are made up of 13 elected officials and 30 or so appointed members. That's 43 undergrads vs. 200 or so tenure, associate, overpaid professors from our increasing tuitions. Now that's a modern day DAVID AND GOLIATH.
The truth is the university only wants to keep a few, and depose the majority either to the drop-out list, or in the "take two classes at Pima and call me next semester" list. This is the skeleton of a public university.
Overall both the students and the professors should work together on the matter of grading and studying. On the matter of student housing, that's really an uphill battle - which the residents will WIN.
