The art department is throwing a birthday party! Our very own Joseph Gross Gallery turns 20 this year, and to celebrate, the art department has put together an Anniversary Exhibition. Works by Mary Bates, Phyllis Bramson, James Davis, Baily Doogan, Rudy Fernandez, Billy Hassell, Tim McDowell, Bruce McGrew, Kevin Sloan, Lenore Tauney, Jim Ward and Hannah Wilke will be on display in the gallery between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. today. The Building Academic Community Speaker Series hits another high note today with a speech by Jerrold E. Hogle. Hogle is the chair of the faculty and University Distinguished Professors in the Department of English - obviously, a very learned man with lots to say. He will dish you the dirt on "The Real Horrors of 'The Phantom of the Opera'" from noon to 1 p.m. today. Grab yourself one of the comfy seats in Gallagher Theatre and bring your lunch. Food for the mind, food for the body - an irresistible combination. Contact Sue Robison at 621-4700 for details.

Meet the man partially responsible for our football team's 4-0 record this season. Dick Tomey, head coach of the UA football team, will be the man of the hour at "Lunch with Coach" today in Room 329 of the McKale Memorial Center. Hang out with the big guy and other sport fans from noon to 1 p.m. The football office has more information for you at 621-4917.

If you don't know the difference between a CD and a compact disc, perhaps you should check out today's Fall Leadership Workshop. The Arizona Collegiate Institute for Leadership (part of Student Programs) is sponsoring "Investment Strategies for Your Future," a lecture by Karen Cappello of First Investors. Come to Room 281 of the Student Union to learn how to navigate the maze of investment. Pre-registration is required, but you may do so up until the start of the workshop at 3 p.m. Any questions may be directed to Jill Hewins at 621-5853.

The mathematics department wants to help you get ahead in the job market. Professor Juan Repestro will talk to you about "Internships in Mathematics, Engineering, and the Sciences" today from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 123 of the new Math Teaching Lab. Gain valuable insight from students who have done internships and get some helpful hints about the application process, all courtesy of the UA. Chris Mikel can tell you more at 621-2056.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, especially if your metaphorical kitty is an English paper. Kendra Gaines, of the Writing Skills Improvement Program, will help you out with your "Critical or Rhetorical Analysis: Exploring Different Approaches" today from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Room 310 of the Modern Languages building. Donna Rabuck can give you details about this and other Writing About Literature Workshops at 621-5849.

Snap on those braces and strap on those cherry-reds - Dave's Big Deluxe is playing with Unsteady tonight in The Cellar! The show is brought to you by UAB's Rising Star Entertainment, and can be partaken of for a mere $6. Show starts at 7:30 p.m., but doors open at 7 p.m. Arrive fashionably late, or get the good seats early - it's your choice.

If you would rather enjoy someone else's writing, go to the Poetry Reading tonight in the Modern Languages Auditorium. The Poetry Center here on campus is sponsoring this event, which features readings by undergraduates Julian Billups, Christie Peterson and Charles Speck.
