How many hyphens does it take to get to the center of the Optical Sciences Special Presentation? "Er-Doped Sol-Gel Silica-In-Silicon Waveguides for Optical Amplification" is the subject of Eric M. Yeatman's (Imperial College, London) lecture this morning. He will be speaking from 11 a.m. to noon in Room 701 of the Meinel Building in the Optical Sciences Center. Mahmoud Fallahi, the host of the presentation, can answer your questions at 621-8260.

Quit complaining about how expensive the parking meters around campus are and get over to the Parking & Transportation Symposium. From noon to 1 p.m. in Room 285 of the Student Union, you can yell your head off (politely, of course) about all the things that make you mad about parking at the UA. If you think you could do a better job yourself, tell them (The Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee) so - they are open to suggestions as well as questions. Call Marlis Davis at 621-3550 for more information.

Don't just shoo the flies that bother you - find out why they do it at today's Arizona Research Laboratories Division of Neurobiology Seminar. Jonathan Bacon (Sussex Centre for Neuroscience, School of Biological Sciences, University of Sussex) will explain "Wiring up a Simple Neural Circuit in Drosophila: Genes to Behavior" at noon in Room 601 of the Gould-Simpson Building. Contact John Hildebrand at 621-6626 for details.

Honor the roots of the Southwest during day one of American Indian Cultural Celebration Week. The Native American Resources Center, located in the Nugent Building, will be holding an Open House from 1 to 4 this afternoon to get you familiar with Native American culture and the UA's Native American culture programs. Return to the offices at 5:30 p.m. to watch the Native American Talent Showcase. The theme for this year's event is "Celebrating Native Diversity and Linking the Generations," and will be demonstrated through dance, drumming and singing throughout the week. Call 621-9217 for information.

Bob Ross was right on when he talked about "happy little trees." They do exist - ask Ray Callaway. He has taken a field trip from the University of Montana to talk to you about "Positive interactions and the structure of plant communities" at the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Seminar this afternoon. Meet him at 4 p.m. in Room 301 of the Biological Sciences West building. Susana Noriega-Edmond can schedule you some time to talk with him at 621-1588.

In its own special way, the UA is celebrating Jesse "The Body" Ventura's newly-won position as governor of Minnesota. How? By taking you back to a time when you thought a bodyslam was real and you didn't know the difference between a piledriver and a screwdriver. The University Activities Board is sponsoring a free showing of the World Wrestling Federation's "Raw is War" event tonight in the Cellar. Show up at 10 p.m. to recapture your childhood Sunday mornings on a big screen TV. Call the UAB at 621-8046 for more information.
