A few sporadic observations on the world of sports:

Will the goalposts come down? Two years ago the Scum Devil fans tried to take down Arizona's goalposts after their team's 56-14 obliteration of the Wildcats. This year UA is 10-1 and headed to a major bowl, while ASU is scumming along at 5-5 and needing one win to have a winning season and become bowl eligible. Personally, if Arizona wins to go 11-1 and possibly move even higher up in the national rankings, the posts need to come down.

If nothing else we all need to show Scum Devil fans how to tear 'em down properly.

Next year's football schedule has Middle Tennessee, Texas Christian and UTEP for Arizona's non-conference games. So UA could expect a lot of comparisons to Kansas State next year.

Just try to remember, all, that these schedules were planned out years in advance, and the current UA football scheduling guru, assistant athletic director Bob Logan, has said there won't be any more Middle Tennessee/Northeast Louisiana patsies in the future.

Instead, he's spouting names like Michigan and Colorado.

Cross your fingers.

The Icecats finally get to play a Saturday night game without going up against UA football this weekend. Even against football they're still outdrawing the Gila Monsters. You'd think the City of Tucson would take that as a sign...

Dan profiled the most exciting players in the four major pro sports. Here are my picks for Arizona: football - Trung Canidate, baseball - Ben Diggins, hockey - Paul Dorn, men's basketball - Jason Terry, volleyball - Lesley DuBois, soccer - Nikki Jones, cross country - Amy Skieresz, softballÊ- er, Alison Johnson-McCutcheon graduated, so I'll have to pick a new representative come spring. Women's basketball needs to play a few more games before I pick a successor to Adia Barnes.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are smoking crack. Throwing oodles of money at a pitcher with a bad back (Randy Johnson) and a center fielder who's missed an average of 29 games the past two years and never hit 30 home runs (Bernie Williams) aren't going to turn them into winners for 1999. Smaller moves, like signing left-handed reliever Greg Swindell and first baseman/pinch hitter Greg Colbrunn, is what Arizona needs to do to become competitive in the NL West.

Suddenly the Arizona women's cross country team seems to have a shot at the national title after upsetting Stanford at the Western Regional last week. Now that would be one hell of a way for Amy Skieresz to go out, with both an individual title and the national crown.

Pull that off, Amy, and for at least five seconds you're allowed to have an ego.

Somebody reminded me the NBA lockout is still going on. I'd almost forgotten. Again.

If the football team goes to the Rose Bowl, why not stay in Los Angeles and go to the men's basketball game at UCLA on Jan. 2 and against Southern Cal on Jan. 4? I know I will. So, everyone be UCLA football fans the next two weeks so the Bruins can go to the Fiesta Bowl.

I can't believe I just said that. George Ramos will probably have a heart attack down in the journalism department office.

Chris Jackson is a junior majoring in journalism, and thinks that if nothing else, George should give him extra credit for what he just said about UCLA.
