UA President Peter Likins this semester filled the newly created vice president for advancement position and chose a new vice president for research and graduate studies.

Janet Bingham, former assistant vice president of health sciences, beat out more than 140 applicants to be vice president for advancement.

Bingham, who was chosen Nov. 2, said she is studying the University of Arizona for areas that need improvement.

"It will include not only every segment of the university community but local and state-wide leaders," she said.

The UA is lacking an organized public relations office, Bingham said, but she has not yet decided if she will create a separate department for that purpose.

Richard Powell, UA's optical science director, will take the vice president for research and graduate studies post Jan. 1.

"I hope to work with faculty and college administrators to build multi-disciplinary programs and that reach out to the local community and use UA expertise to solve problems," Powell said.

A 16-member selection committee chose Powell over 10 other applicants. He will replace Michael Cusanovich, who announced his resignation in April.
