Democratic candidate Tom Volgy responds to comments made by U.S. Republican Rep. Jim Kolbe during a debate Oct. 28 at the Doubletree Hotel. Volgy, a political science professor at the UA, lost to the incumbent Kolbe for the representative position.

Two UA professors who were defeated Nov. 3 in their respective election races have not ruled out future political aspirations.

Political science professor Tom Volgy attempted to unseat the incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Kolbe from his position as Southern Arizona's Representative. Volgy, a Democrat, won 45 percent of voters' support while Kolbe triumphed with 52 percent.

Volgy, who served as a Tucson City Council member and mayor, refused to accept any political action committee donations.

While he refused last night to announce any future plans to run for office, Volgy did not deny the possibility.

Sociology professor Celestino Fernandez also failed in his attempt to win a position on the Tucson Unified School District Board.

Fernandez, former provost of the Arizona International College, received 7.41 percent of the vote and finished seventh out of nine candidates.

He also said last night that he has not put all political dreams to rest.

"I never shut any doors, but I don't have any plans at all," Fernandez said.
