Plans for Memorial Student Union

renovations are still in the works despite a failed November 1997 referendum aimed at securing some funding with a student fee.

On Aug. 25, UA President Peter Likins announced a plan to create a referendum on a student fee to be assessed when construction on the project is complete in May 2001.

While the administration plans to put the revised referendum to a vote, "it will def-initely not be happening next semester," said Associated Students President Tara Taylor.

"Right now there's nothing set in stone," Taylor said. "We don't even know the cost of the building yet."

In 1997, students turned out in record numbers to vote against the original referendum that would have provided $31.5 million of the proposed $70 million needed for the renovation.

Out of 4,413 voters, 71.8 percent cast ballots against the student fee.
