University police arrested a student on suspicion of theft and criminal damage early Tuesday morning after he was seen pulling a parking sign out of the ground, police reports stated.

Officers went to Manzanita-Mohave residence hall, 1000 N. Park Ave., at 1:52 a.m. after a Resident Assistant called and told police he had seen four students attempt to take the sign into an elevator, reports stated.

The RA told police he saw Manzanita-Mohave resident Brandt David James, 19, and three other men standing around the Head Resident parking sign. He told officers he saw Jones push and pull the sign along with the other men.

According to reports, the RA saw sign come out of the ground and watched James carry it into the residence hall lobby.

The RA told the men to stop as they headed toward the elevator, reports stated. James was carrying the sign as another man held the elevator door open.

When the door-holder saw the RA, he said "Oh, shit," and shut the door, stranding James with the sign, according to reports.

James told the RA he leaned against the sign and felt it come loose. He also said he was just holding the sign until he could return it later that day, reports stated.

James told police he had not planned to steal the sign, but admitted he got into trouble last semester for stealing a sign, reports stated.

Officers found and damage to the concrete around where the sign had been.

James was cited and released.

Police referred two students to the Dean of Students Diversion Program early Tuesday morning after a fraternity member admitted to buying alcohol for an underage student.

According to police reports, officers went to the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house, 645 E. University Blvd., at 12:54 a.m. because of a noise disturbance call.

When police arrived, they found a group of men yelling and throwing spaghetti at each other, reports stated.

As the police quieted the men down, one officer saw a student put a can of Keystone beer into a cooler. Officers questioned the student and discovered he was underage.

Police then spoke with the Social/Pledge Chairman for the fraternity who said he bought the beer and "wished to take responsibility for providing the alcohol" to the underage fraternity member, reports stated.

None of the other spaghetti-throwing men appeared intoxicated. Police emptied the beer.

A university employee called police Tuesday afternoon after she discovered extra charges on a UA Motorpool credit card.

According to police reports, the employee told police a student checked out a white 1993 Chevrolet Lumina from the Motorpool on Dec. 16. A Motorpool employee gave the student a gas station credit card for the car during Christmas break.

The employee told police the student had the car for 22 days and put 155 miles on it, which "was not a problem," reports stated.

According to reports, the student used the card in Flagstaff, Gilbert and Mesa, Arizona. The employee told police driving from Tucson to Flagstaff and back is more than 500 miles, but the car had only 155 miles on it.

The employee told officers the student had also provided false information on his application for the car. According to reports, the student said he worked for the Physiology Department. When the employee called the department, no one with the student's name worked there.

Police tried to contact the student but were unsuccessful in locating his phone number or address.

An officer saw a green metal pipe in her glove box. Police searched her car and found a green leafy substance inside a plastic bag in her purse, reports stated.

Barvinchak told police she would answer "some" of their questions and told them she had just bought the suspected marijuana. She told them she paid $25 for it and smoked every couple of days, reports stated. She refused to tell police who sold it to her.
