Gay student not offended by 'Billy'
To the editor,
I am writing in response to the numerous "letters to the editor" that appeared in Monday's Wildcat .
The comic strip "Looking for Billy" which appeared in the August 31, 1998 Wildcat is not attacking homosexuals!
I am gay. I was not offended by the August 31 comic strip.
The comic strip wasn't about "all gays should die!".
I was not offended because I saw another message in that comic strip.
In my opinion, the comic strip was making fun of homophobes.
It was showing the idiocy and utter disrespect for morals that people who commonly harass homosexual displays.
The Bug and Bee depicted in "Looking for Billy" AREN'T EVEN GAY!
They were simply two male friends hugging on the street, and then were perceived as gay by a homophobe.
Why don't we start attacking the other comics? Take the August 31 "Pickle." There is weight discrimination in plain text!
Where are the complaints about that?
Are we now saying that it is morally acceptable to degrade fat people, but morally wrong to admit that gay bashers exist? Gay bashers exist whether the Wildcat mentions them or not. I think the comic was intended to make fun of gay bashers, which seems like a constructive way to mention them.
