Faith No More

Who Cares A Lot? The Greatest Hits

(Slash/Reprise)

Faith No More went through a lot of changes over the years, most notably switching singers from the vocally-challenged Chuck Mosely to Mike Patton, one of music's most bizarre personas. Then, after the success of Epic, Patton's first album with the band, the vocalist dropped his slightly psychotic singing style in favor of a more serious, less grating sound. Later on, founding member and guitarist Jim Martin left the group, with two replacements to follow, before it all came to an end.

As a result, the group's sound changed remarkably and often, and was sometimes much better than others. What that means in terms of this CD is that, as a whole, it's schizophrenic - one which gives some glimpses into what made FNM so unique, but fails to paint even a semi-realized picture on its own.

A second CD of unreleased and live tracks is included as a bonus, but the majority of these songs sound like they were simply out-takes from the last album, and aren't worth the price; the space would have been much better used by the inclusion of some rarer tracks from the band's older days, when they were still worth tracking down.
