The 1999 PING Arizona Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament came to a close yesterday and the Washington Huskies took home the victory. Washington posted a three-round total of 861, just nine shots over par, and were able to maintain a three-stroke cushion over second place Southern Cal. UCLA ended the day in the third spot with a score of 868.

The Arizona Wildcats, who hosted the event at the Raven Golf Club at Sabino Springs, placed ninth out of the 19 competing programs, carding a score of 291.

UA junior Derek Gillespie, who ended the first day of competition in a dead heat for the individual leader spot, ended up tying for third place overall, two stokes under par. A 3-over-par score of 74 and his combined individual total of 211 were not enough to compete with Washington's Robb Bergeson.

Bergeson took home the tournament's best score, recording a total of 209, four strokes below par.

Two members of Arizona's second team, Mark Manwaring (216) and Tim Weiss (217), finished behind Gillespie and were the only other Wildcats to place in the top 20.

Arizona's only senior, Andy Barnes, was not pleased with his squad's mediocre finish or his individual score of 225 in the tournament.

"I think we all expected to play well," Barnes said. "We took for granted that we were playing on our home court, and to end up in ninth place was a disappointment, to say the least."

Having completed the PING tournament, the men's golf team travels to Honolulu Feb. 17-19, to compete in the John Burns Intercollegiate.
