Sprechen Sie Deutsch, baby? The German Film Series kicks off today with Brother of Sleep. It's a "provocative" tale of love, tragedy, violence, and great music. Catch it for free at 7:30 p.m. in the Modern Languages Auditorium. Don't worry if "Ich bin ein Berliner" doesn't ring a bell - English subtitles are included.

Into American History? Then go see the critically acclaimed American History X Feb. 3-7 at Gallagher. Shows are at 7:30 p.m. and 9:50 p.m., and you know the cost: $2.50. Call 621-4671 if you need a quick brush-up on all those presidents.

Friday, February 5

Normally, bluegrass and punk rock do not appear at the same venue on the same night, but Nimbus Brewing Company, 3850 E. 44th St., says to hell with convention! The twangy tones of Degrees Plato will start at 6 p.m., followed by The Weird Lovemakers at 9 p.m. Call 745-9175 for more musical info.

Still bummed about the death of Jerry Garcia? Come see some surviving members of his group when the David Nelson Band takes the stage in an all-ages show at the Rialto Theater, 318 E. Congress, at 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 day of show.

Hear ye! Hear ye! The Arizona Renaissance Festival, that fun-filled celebration of medieval food, drink, and tight corsets opens today in Florence Junction. Come join the festivities every weekend through March from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Buy your tickets at Fry's and call (520) 463-2700 for all the info.

Monday, February 8

Challah is the traditional braided bread eaten by Jews on the Sabbath. From 10 a.m.-2 p.m. today on the UA Mall, Hillel will attempt to make the world's largest challah. It's sponsored by Greek Jewish Council as a part of Jewish Awareness Month. Call Hillel at 624-6561 and get ready to bake.

Tuesday February 9

G'day Mate gets a little more cultural than Crocodile Dundee, when the Australian Dance Theater performs Furioso at Centennial Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to this athletic but sensual expression of raw emotion are $20, but half price for students with ID and children 18 and under. Wednesday, February 10

Who could forget the drug-induced antics of Cheech and Chong? Well, maybe if you followed their lifestyle you did. Tommy Chong plays Laff's Comedy Caffe, 2900 E. Broadway, tonight and tomorrow. Call 32-FUNNY and try to remember the number on your way to the phone.
