How it Feels to be

Something On

(Sub Pop)

You know more about Sunny Day Real Estate than you think you do. Their sound is what some would call "emo;" emotional, layered songs with singing guitars. It's distinctively good music that doesn't need much definitive language to describe.

SDRE's song are like road trips - like traveling on a road you've never been on before that's going to a certain destination you're not quite sure of. All the twists and turns are unexpected, yet you follow blindly along, because those turns are part of the natural landscape.

How it Feels to be Something On is not the dark and hypnotic highway that SDRE's first album, Diary, is but it has some definite high points. "Guitars and Video Games," is arguably the best song on the album - the composition is fascinating enough, and it's executed so well, that it takes you with it as the song dips and drives along. With music like this, it's hard to go wrong. - annie holub
