Sorry in Pig Minor

(Amphetamine Reptile)

If the Butthole Surfers and Black Sabbath had a baby, you'd have a cow; I mean, the Cows. What's so great about this band is that it is difficult to categorize - and it seems to like it that way. With an 11-year history and nine albums, the Cows are one of the most indie of indie bands around that excels at pleasing fans and alienating non-believers. "Sorry..." will surprise those who saw the last two Cows releases as Jesus Lizard-esque: straight forward rock albums with a weird singer.

Produced by King Buzzo of the Melvins, "Sorry..." is definitely the band's most eclectic release yet, a Cows "White Album." Featured are a few time-tested Cows-like numbers, including "Death in Tall Weeds," "Saliva of the Fittest" and "Felon of Troy." Most of the album, though, is dedicated to the newer, weirder, Cows. There's "Cabin Man" and its oration of a suicide-attempt-turned-anger-driven-desire-to-fly-like-a-cockroach, over an erupting wall of sound; the vague diary entry-like lyrics of "Eureka! Funday!;" and the hilarious, quasi-flamenco/jazz of "El Shiksa." Buy it, stir thoroughly and enjoy. - brian mock
