kristy mangos catalyst Eric Winters (left), owner of Cafe Quebec, and Diana Yakowitz, curator of the cafe's Salon Q, enjoy an afternoon of coffee and art Monday at the cafe. The sixth art show since February is currently on exhibit at Salon Q.

Coffee shops serve far more than as a haven for the tired or stressed college student; Many serve as inspirations to poets and artists alike.

Salon Q has stepped up to unite the arts and coffee houses in an innovative way. In an attempt to bring new life to the cafe and art to its walls, Cafe Quebec owner Eric Winters turned to friend, artist and childhood baby sitter Diana Yakowitz for a solution.

As both creator and curator of Salon Q, each month Yakowitz presents a new exhibit, relying on Tucson-based artists and a varying blend of subject matter and media incorporating everything from traditional watercolor to next month's experimental X-ray exhibit.

For Yakowitz, her art has become the art of arrangement. The tools of her trade are the artworks of others. These artists trust her to not only display their work but care for it and keep it safe from stray cigarettes, spilled coffee and greasy heads leaned against walls. With all these things to consider, layout is not an easy task. "Eric used to be closed on Mondays," stated Yakowitz. "I'd have the whole day to come in, lay out the pieces, and move them around till they were just right."

With Cafe Quebec now open seven days a week, Yakowitz often ends up pulling all-nighters to ensure a successful display. So far she has achieved success with the exception of one negative comment found in her guest book stating, "[it is fascinating to find] shit hanging on the walls." Regardless, Yakowitz prefers negative feedback to no feedback.

Yakowitz is currently seeking artists for "Beast-mas," an exhibit which will feature mixed media art on animals and the varying attitudes toward animals. For more information contact Yakowitz at art_CafeQuebec@yahoo.com or drop by Cafe Quebec, peruse the art, drink a cup of coffee and envision your work on the walls.

Cafe Quebec is located at 121 E. Broadway Blvd. Hours are 8 a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. - 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Phone 798-3552.
