Picture yourself on Broadway stage, your face turned upwards toward the unnervingly bright stage lights, belting out a lamentation in character, the audience wiping tears from their made-up eyes, which aren't even half as made-up as yours, preparing their roses to toss at your costumed feet during the standing ovation you will undoubtedly receive when you finally run out of breath after holding that last high A for five minutes in a perfect vibrato.

If this is at all close to your personal vision of grandeur, then you're in luck: The Broadway production company and its touring counterparts for the hit rock-musical Rent are holding auditions today at Hotel Congress, 311 E. Congress St.

If you have this beautiful copy of Catalyst in your hands and it's still between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., head on over there, but keep these few requirements, made by the casting directors themselves, in mind: dress is casual, bring a Walkman, a photo and resume and prepare two rock/pop songs. They're looking for people of all ethnic backgrounds who are in their early to mid-20s. Absolutely no showtunes are allowed, and do not wear plastic pants. We're serious. It says this in the press material.

It's "a real honest-to-God break," said Tappan King of UApresents, who will be bringing a production of Rent to Centennial Hall next month, so if you think you're hip and "authentic" enough to take part in New York, Los Angeles and touring productions of the show, put your swerve on and hitchhike down there. If you have any further questions, call the Rent audition hotline at (212) 479-0833. And break a leg.
