Catcalls

Arizona Daily Wildcat,
August 23, 1999

And the fun begins again. Today is the new beginning for 35,000 students as the fall semester begins this morning. Make sure to watch out for those construction zones and remember that North Mountain Avenue is now a two-way street.

For those wondering what's going on around here, here is your answer. That large chain link fence surrounding Gallagher Theatre on the east side of the UA Memorial Student Union is a blockade for construction. Expect this fence to impede your travels around the union for the next two years. If you have any questions, call Melissa Dryden at 621-9251. If you get lost, use all those nifty construction re-routing signs that were strategically placed throughout campus.

New beginnings are happening everywhere for students, and in a few years, freshmen will have a building they can call their own thanks to the construction of the Integrated Learning Center on the UA Mall just west of North Cherry Avenue which begins today. For the next several months large dump trucks will remove dirt from this area approximately every five minutes. Pay attention to signs because bike and pedestrian routes have been altered from previous semesters. Direct any questions or concerns to Melissa Dryden at 621-9251.

Prevent those pesky thieves from putting their hands on your bike. The UA Police Department is registering bicycles today from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in front of Gallagher Theatre on the UA Mall. Sponsored by the Parking and Transportation Department, it's a helpful way to prevent theft, and if a theft does occur it assists in the recovery of your bike. Just show up with a student ID and your bike and they will set you up. Call the Parking and Transportation Department at 621-1400 if you have any questions.

We all hate those pesky roommates who never get our messages right. Well, greek house and dorm residents can now rejoice because they can have voice mail installed into their phone systems. CCIT is preparing this new system to be available to all campus dwellers. The voice mail will allow you to retrieve your messages from any touch tone phone, and can be hooked up to a pager or another phone to let you know when that special someone is calling. Call CCIT at 621-8999 to get the ball rolling.

Everywhere you look there will be freebies. The beginning of a new semester always means great giveaways on the UA Mall. Look for various vendors and booths on the grassy lawn this afternoon as everyone from religious groups to corporate America will be vying to grab a piece of your time. This is your chance to get all of those free T-shirts you will be wearing for the next five years in college. The booths go up at 8 a.m. and will be up until 5 p.m. If your first day of class is too busy, just catch them tomorrow or Wednesday.
