Letter writer in error

Talk about this story

To the editor,

I do believe that there is an equal number of faiths represented in the lobbies of the dorms here at the UA. For him to say that the Newman Center Catholic Church gets more representation here on campus shows his lack in researching before writing his letter. The "Why I am Catholic" flyer was brief just like the other flyers from the various faiths on campus are giving a brief description, location and time. The Newman Center is not allowed past the lobby just like Wildcats for Christ and the other faiths. If he would have looked into the subject more, he would have seen that every Tuesday evening holds a different topic on the History and Traditions of the Catholic Church hence the name, Why I am Catholic, Series. This week's series was "Who Elects the Pope."

If your religious organization or any organization is a recognized club at the University of Arizona as provided by the Department of Student Programs, the flyer can be posted in the dorms. This would probably be the reason why the Islamic Center Tucson is "barred" from the dorms since it is not recognized by the Department of Student Programs.

Now as an elected ASUA senator, I would have expected that Ahmad Nasim would have known of this requirement before accusing the Newman Center of having special privileges over the other faiths on campus.

Ahmad Nasim, I would love to see an ad stating "Why I am a Muslim" in the lobbies of the dorms, and unlike you and the handful of others I would not feel offended by a different religion being posted in the lobby. And yes, it would be possible if the organization is recognized.

The last I checked, we were in the United States of America where we cherish the freedom of religion and speech and are fortunate enough to be able to live around other religions in peace.
