Men's tennis pounds Rice

Winning five out of six singles matches and two out three in doubles play, No. 55 Arizona (3-2 overall, 0-2 in Pacific 10 Conference) handed No. 46 Rice (2-2 overall) it's second consecutive loss 6-1 at Robson Tennis Center yesterday.

Opening the match, seniors Jean-Noel LaCoste and Michel Stopa scratched out a 9-7 victory against Robert Collins and Ramez Qamer. Juniors Alex Aybar and Brian Jackson held off Cody Jackson and Alexis Pourchet, 9-8 (10-8), clinching the crucial first point of the match.

"The key to the match was the doubles point," head coach Bill Wright said. "It helped us boost our confidence for the match and our attitude."

The first five positions in the singles lineup each came away with wins. Aybar (13-6, 0-2) defeated Mathis Maethes, 6-7, 7-6, 1-0 before Maethes retired due to an injured back.

In the No. 2 position, LaCoste (4-5, 0-2) defeated Collins, 6-1, 6-2. Continuing UA's roll, No. 3 Stopa (7-7, 0-2) won in straight sets against Fabien Giraud, 6-3, 7-5.

No. 4 freshman Tom Lloyd (6-7, 0-2) closed out the match for the third time this year, defeating Pourchet in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Gymnastics team drops two home meets

Although the No. 25 Arizona gymnastics team lost to No. 15 Washington and No. 21 Minnesota in meets last weekend, head coach Bill Ryden said the team still had several strong performances.

"Our goal isn't necessarily to win," Ryden said. "Our main goal is to compete better."

UA fell just short of beating the Minnesota Gophers yesterday, as they recorded their highest team score of the season with a 195.6. The Wildcats also scored season-highs on the vault (48.875), the bars (49.2) and the floor (49.375).

Junior Kara Fry won the beam title with a 9.875 and tied for second place on the bars with a 9.875. Her overall score of 39.325 was good for second in the all-around.

Sophomore Randi Liljenquist took the all-around title with a career-high 39.425 and the floor title with a career-high 9.95. She also tied for second place on the bars (9.875) and the beam (9.85).

Arizona showed improvement in yesterday's meet after struggling against Washington on Friday and falling to 1-4 in the Pacific 10 Conference.

The Wildcats trailed throughout the meet but captured individual first-place honors on the bars and the floor.

Senior Heidi Hornbeek tied for top honors on the bars (9.9), placed second on the vault (9.825) and finished third on the beam (9.775). She also placed second in the all-around with a 39.3.

Liljenquist took the floor title with a 9.925 and tied for first on the bars with a 9.9. She also tied for third place in the all-around with a 39.275.

Glenn sets 3 school track records

Last weekend, the Arizona women's track and field team beat instate rivals Arizona State and Northern Arizona, 80-79 and 95-70, respectively.

The men's team, however, was only able to beat NAU, 78-68, while coming up short against ASU, 79-69.

The highlight of the women's meet was the performance of sophomore Brianna Glenn, who won all three events she participated in - the 60-meter, 200-meter and the long jump. Glenn set school records in each event.

"It was good to get a feeling for what's ahead at the (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) championships," Glenn said.

Junior Andrea Neary also set a school record in the pole vault going 12-9 1/2. This marks the third week in a row Neary has broken her own school record.

On the men's side, senior Jeff Dutoit improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault with a 16-2 vault.

Highlighting the men's team was a victory by the distance medley team of junior Tom Prindiville, senior Chris Golston, graduate student Christopher Schaefer and senior Jeremy Lyon with a time of 10:18.57.
