The top-ranked Arizona women's golf team jumped into the lead after the second day of play yesterday at the Arizona Invitational held at the Randolph Park Golf Club in Tucson.

The Wildcats set a school record by shooting an 11-under-par 277.

With their record-breaking performance, the team leads the tournament in overall standings with a score of 567, which is 9-under-par.

"Anytime you set a school record you have to be excited," junior Christina Monteiro said.

Arizona State and Duke are tied for second with a team score of a 574, seven strokes behind the Wildcats.

Monteiro shot a 69 yesterday, putting her at 5-under-par and in second place in the individual standings. She credits much of her success to excellent putting yesterday.

"I must have had the right line today because I made a lot of puts," Monteiro said. "I made a few mistakes but I had so many birdies it counteracted it."

Arizona All-American senior Jenna Daniels was extremely impressed with Monteiro's play.

Daniels said Monteiro has found a lot of confidence in her game.

"I'm in awe how her score always counts. She's going to play well and somehow finds a way up there," Daniels said. "She has a lot of confidence right now and when you have confidence, you play well. I just love her game."

Although Daniels started off the tournament shooting a 76, she came back yesterday to fire a 69.

"I drove the ball in the fairway today and that was the difference," Daniels said. "I hit my driver well and I am happy with the way I played today."

Sophomore Cristina Baena shot a 3-under-par 69, earning her a third place spot.

Senior Jill Gomric fell 14 spots to 24th after shooting a 74.

With Arizona now in the lead, Daniels feels confident that Arizona can capture the team title.

"We have a seven shot lead, everyone has a lot of good opportunities but we can't underestimate Duke," Daniels said. "Everything is in our favor."
