UA women's hockey faces the Sun Devils

Talk about this story

It's been two-and-a-half months since the Arizona State women's hockey team came to Tucson to play the UA Icers.

The team the Sun Devils will find at the Gateway Ice Center at Speedway and Kolb tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. won't be like the Icers squad they faced on Dec. 4.

ASU won 4-0 as Arizona got off to an 0-6 start in its inaugural season.

But the Icers rebounded by going 3-0-1 and winning their division at the annual Las Vegas Women's Classic Feb. 3-6.

"That was early on in our season," UA team president Tami Thornburg said. "I think that we stand a chance against them this time."

Thornburg said ASU is also coming off a successful time in Las Vegas.

"They're more defensive than offensive," she said of the Sun Devils. "They won their championship in Las Vegas also in their division. But I think we've come such a long way that we definitely can compete with them."

As much as the Icers are looking for a win, they're also looking to recruit a few fans. The team's game against ASU was announced at the Icecats-IceDevils game Friday night.

"We've been telling everyone about this game," Thornburg said. "This is only the second time we've played them."

The Icers' and Sun Devils' "B" squads will also go head-to-head at the Gateway Ice Center tomorrow night at 8:30.
