Cyclists have responsibilities too

By Paul Muhlrad

To the editor,

As a bicycle commuter, I share Lora J. Mackel's frustration with inattentive and irresponsible pedestrians. But, Lora, cyclists have some responsibilities too. I see bike riders pulling illegal and stupid maneuvers every day. The vast majority of cyclists I see on campus completely disregard stop signs. You are correct in pointing out that when pedestrians are in a crosswalk, bicyclists must stop for them. Have you ever seen that happen? I have seen a few instances, but in the nine and a half years I've been at the UA, I could probably count them on one hand. It's not an "us versus them" issue, as your commentary implies. It is all of us - pedestrians, motorists, service workers, skateboarders, rollerbladers AND cyclists. The UA is a tiny place with a lot of busy people. We all have to accept our fair share of responsibility to help it run smoothly and peacefully.
