In front of crowds in excess of 300 people during the first Laxcat Family Weekend, the Laxcats beat Ft. Lewis College 17-3 and the University of San Diego 12-10 this weekend.

"It felt really good to get two wins in front of the parents," mid-fielder Nate Schmidt said.

Twenty-one sets of parents were in attendance as the Laxcats played in Arizona Stadium for the first time since 1993.

"The stadium looked spectacular," head coach Mickey-Miles Felton said. "The important thing was that the football lines were not down, so the field looked like a lacrosse field."

On Saturday afternoon, the Laxcats jumped all over Ft. Lewis College and got revenge from its opening day loss last season.

"In the beginning of the game, we wanted to go out there and get them back for last year," mid-fielder Chris Mastores said. "After the game got going, we just wanted to try out some new things and get everyone to play."

The Laxcats got goals from 10 different players, including attacker Eric Renner, and mid-fielders Matt Wilkens and Schmidt, who all had three goals and one assist.

"I wanted to be really consistent in the shots that I took and did not want to take any bad shots," Schmidt said, who scored five goals on five shots during the weekend series.

With yesterday's victory against USD, the Laxcats won another division game to improve its record to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the division.

The game was close throughout.

After three unanswered goals by the Toreros, USD was down by only one goal, until Laxcat senior defenseman Laurance Bass scored the momentum-changing goal with 5:39 left to put the Laxcats up by two goals.

"It was the first goal that I scored in college, and it could not have come at a more opportune time," Bass said.

The defense was particularly strong in the final minute, holding off USD to preserve the victory.

"The defense really stepped up this weekend," Schmidt said. "Jeff Cady, Tommy Christian and Laurance Bass put us on their shoulders and carried the rest of the team."

Attackers Matt Martini and Wilkens both scored three goals in the game.

Wilkens led the team with six goals during the weekend.
