More dedications needed

Talk about this story

The UA athletic department made history two Saturday's ago by naming the hardwood at McKale Center the Lute Olson Court.

Why stop there?

Many other famous areas on campus can be named after some legendary Wildcats.

Coach O deserves his name on the court that he built, so why don't some of these other legends at UA deserve their names on the famous parts of campus that they helped build?

Take for instance the family studies department.

Is there a more famous alum of that department than Miles Simon. So, why not name it the Miles Simon family studies department.

Athletic Director Jim Livengood slips and slides his way past the idea of a student section every time he is asked about it, but when the university finally wises up and decides it is the right thing to do, they can call it the Jim Livengood Student Section.

Arizona Stadium isn't named for anyone, but it does hold something sacred inside of it - the goalposts.

Clearly these uprights belong to former UA kicker Mark McDonald, so, they should now become the Mark McDonald Goalposts.

The U of A Bookstore will be renovated shortly and for the dedication of the new store, UA administrators should bring back former football players Mikael Smith and Leland Gayles for the ceremony.

After all, in 1997 it was Smith and Gayles who were suspended for selling books that the athletic department gave them for free.

The Smith and Gayles Bookstore will be one of the finest on any college campus and will house plenty of "How to" books explaining the ins and outs of making a quick buck.

The football program also can't overlook an obvious dedication that would take place on the practice field.

Unlike how Lute Olson earned his name on the court for many years of hard work and dedication, former UA cornerback Kelvin Hunter earned his name on the practice tackling dummies for, well, obviously never using or abusing them.

The new Kelvin Hunter Tackling Dummies will now be collecting dust on the practice field, as they apparently were doing all season long.

Not everything is negative, though.

Consider:

The Michael Wright Key - considering the fact he owns it every game, his name should be on it.

The Dennis Northcutt Endzone - he always had a knack of finding it, so dedicate it to him.

The Mike Candrea Softball Field - if Olson gets his name on the court, Candrea most certainly deserves his name on the field.

The Joan Bonvicini Bench - since the court at McKale Center already has a name, give Coach B the bench that she paces back and forth in front of because she deserves something for the work she has done in the UA women's basketball program.
