Rules for walkers

By Corina Brack

To the editor,

Cheers to both Lora J. Mackel's commentary and "Voice of Doom" author N. C. Winters for publicly addressing the strain pedestrians have been putting on bicyclists across campus. As a fellow student, I appreciate that we all need to be patient with each other during this construction, but as a bicyclist I must register a complaint. The past few weeks I have seen police directing bicycle traffic to stay on bicycle paths and even walk their bikes in some areas, but where are the police telling the pedestrians to stay on the sidewalks and out of the bike paths?

If I can only ride my bike in designated areas, I respectfully request that you pedestrians stick to walking in your designated areas-like, say, the sidewalk! Finally, I might be satisfied if pedestrians would stick to two simple rules: first, look both ways before crossing the street, and second, if you don't look both ways before you cross, please don't decide to stop and check things out once you're in the middle! As a bicyclist, I'm not saying my time is more important than that of pedestrians, but chances are that I'm traveling faster and I've already anticipated moving around another oblivious pedestrian sauntering across my bike path.
