PHOENIX-An Arizona State University student inched closer to a seat on the Arizona Board of Regents after being unanimously approved by a Senate committee yesterday.

If approved by the full Senate, Mary Echeverria would take office June 30 for a one year term.

Echeverria, an economics junior, told the Senate Committee on Education that she wants to promote distance learning to help address Arizona's population growth, advocate a classroom focus on students and support measures to ease transitions between Arizona's community colleges and universities.

She also said she would consult graduate students and student organizations about their concerns.

"I'm a quick study," Echeverria said.

Sen. Linda Aguirre, D-Phoenix, praised the regent candidate.

"We're going to get you some help," she said, referring to a bill that may add a non-voting student to the board of regents in 2001-2002.

Echeverria later said she would travel around the state and to UA to communicate with a range of Arizona students.

As for UA students' concerns over bills that would have limited dorm visitors and regulated Internet use, she said she would encourage students to come to the Legislature to make their voices heard.

"Things work best when they're least touched," she said of the bills, sponsored by Rep. Jean McGrath, R-Glendale.

In other business yesterday, the Senate approved Gary Stuart as a member of the Arizona Board of Regents with no discussion.
