Faculty senators may denounce UDWPE
Members will discuss elimination of writing assessment at today's meeting Members of UA's Faculty Senate today will have the opportunity to vote down student mid-career writing assessments. A motion made at last month's meeting aims to do away with the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Examination - as well as the proposed Writing At Mid-Career Assessment Test - and senators are slated to discuss the issue at today's meeting. But a complete denouncement of the tests is not likely, Faculty Chair Jerrold Hogle said. "I think we should look at this issue in terms of the entire assessment of overall student learning," Hogle said. "Doing away with any kind of writing assessment is unlikely." Hogle said some senators - including student representatives as well as delegates from the College of Engineering - have denounced the UDWPE. But UA President Peter Likins will have the final say over the UDWPE's continuation, Hogle said, because the Senate's vote acts only as a recommendation. ASUA President Cisco Aguilar, a faculty senator, said he would support a plan that would allow each college to develop their own writing assessment. "As a student, I'd love to see the UDWPE eliminated," he said.
