Neary sets school record in pole vault

In its first scored meet of the outdoor season, the Arizona men's and women's track and field teams gave impressive performances as they both defeated California, Colorado and Minnesota to capture the Jim Click Shootout at Roy P. Drachman Stadium, Saturday.

With 202 points the women's team easily defeated their competition as the Golden Bears came in a distant second place with a 158 points. Minnesota was a point behind Cal with 157 and Colorado scored only 58 points to finish in last place.

"I am really happy because we got to get together as a team and celebrate," senior pole vaulter Andrea Neary said of the victory. "Everyone is getting used to competing so we can turn the level of competition up a little more."

Sophomore Briana Glenn had an outstanding day as she won three events - 100 meter, 200m and long jump - as well as running the second leg of the first place winning 4x100m relay team.

"She (Glenn) and Andrea Neary had some amazing performances and that really helped some other people step it up," sophomore Tara Chaplin said.

The 4x100m relay team of Glenn, and seniors Rori Kelly, Nicole Thomas and Carolyn Jackson ran the seventh fastest time in school history with a time 45.27 seconds.

Senior pole vaulter Andrea Neary also had an outstanding day as she set a school record with a vault of 13 -1. The mark was the second highest in Pacific 10 Conference history and ranks second in the country this year, giving Neary an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

"I am elated, I jumped 13 (feet) in practice a couple of weeks ago and it's a big mark for me to get," Neary said.

Chaplin had the other big win for the Wildcats as she ran away from the competition in the 3,000m, easily winning with a time of 9:52.67.

"I was just glad to win because I didn't know what time I would get," she said. "I was pretty tired."

On the men's side, junior Mike Kenyon and Keith Varga were key factors in the UA's 215 point victory.

Arizona scored 34 more points than its closest competitor California, who had 181. Minnesota (122 ) and Colorado (47) finished in third and fourth places respectively.

Kenyon won the 200m with a time of 21.37 and the finished first in the 400m running a time of 46.48. His 400m time was the fourth fastest in school history and his season best.

Varga was equally as dominate as he won the 110m high hurdles in a time of 14.24 and 400m intermediate hurdles in 52.15.

"Their (Kenyon and Varga) performances were pretty much an inspiration to everyone else, those two really stepped it up some," senior Mike White said.

Arizona also got strong performances from senior Jeremy Lyon who won the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:13.05, sophomore Richard Legarra who won the discus with a toss of 181 - 2 and White who won the 800m in a time of 1:52.98.

"We were excited about our performance especially because it was televised (on Fox Sports Net) and it was our first scoring meet," White said.
