Talk about this story

If you missed class yesterday, don't sweat it.

If you're feeling guilty, forget about it.

If you were up at 10 a.m., it's no surprise that you couldn't get off the couch.

Don't worry, your teachers will understand. If they don't, then they just don't have an ounce of American in them.

Dean's notes will be passed out on demand because our mentors should have missed the day as well.

In fact, it should have been a national holiday.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IS OFFICIALLY BACK.

Well, it was officially back last week in Japan, but besides me and a few of my colleagues, who actually were up at 3 a.m. watching the Mets and Cubs from Tokyo, no one watched.

The Reds and Brewers started the day on ESPN, while the Mets and Padres kicked off the coverage on the Deuce.

Griffey debuted in his Red vest with the pinstripes, while Derek Bell had a not-so highly touted debut in a Mets uniform, but his homer in the bottom of the eighth propelled the Amazin's to a 2-1 victory.

Baseball fans from all over began to come out of the hibernation that we have been in since the Yankees took home their second title in as many years last October.

Only 180 days until the end of the regular season on Oct. 1, and believe me it will come quicker than you think.

But, when that crisp autumn day (for most cities) comes around, who is going to be standing on top?

In the American League, it should be a three-team race between the Yankees, Indians and Red Sox. The other team that will be playing in October could be Texas, but I'm saying Oakland is ready for the big time.

It doesn't matter, though, because as long as Jeter, Williams, Clemens, El Duque, Tino, Knoblauch, O'Neill and Rivera are wearing Yankee pinstripes, the Bombers will be playing for a third straight title.

In the NL it's not as clear cut. You have the obvious favorite in the Atlanta Braves, but this should be the year the Mets finally take over considering John Smoltz is out and the Tomahawk Choppers may be too busy swinging their axes at John Rocker's head.

The Reds and Cardinals will duke it out all season long, but pitching will take over in the end and the Cardinals have more.

The West should bring out the best in the Dodgers. This team has way too much talent and good managing to get stuck in the depths of destruction as they were last year.

But, as it should happen in the AL, a New York team will be playing in late October for the right to parade down Broadway to City Hall.

The Subway Series will finally return to the Big Apple, but (as much as it hurts to say) one constant will remain - Rudy Giuliani will still be wearing a Yankee jacket and hat.

Take that as you may, it is not a prediction as to who will win the World Series, we'll just have to wait to find out that piece of information...
