Don't envy Playboy models

By Diana Froehlich
Arizona Daily Wildcat,
September 9, 1999

To the editor,

This is an open letter to the women on this campus:

Were you as dismayed as I was to read of the three UA students who modeled nude for Playboy? Or, perhaps, did you secretly envy them? Please don't envy them, but, rather, pity them, for they have given to so many anonymous men intimate qualities about themselves that cannot be taken back.

Not only have they dishonored themselves, but they have also done a great disservice to women everywhere. Think about this: women want and need to be respected by men. When women have their bodies in pornography, however, they invite disrespect and abuse. These gratuitous images only serve to present all women as some kind of meat to be grabbed and devoured for the pleasure of men. It gives some men the idea that women are loose and willing to lower themselves to their base desires.

As women, we do have control over our own bodies. By keeping them covered, we can be a positive influence in helping women maintain the respect that we all deserve.
