Commentary - March what?
Don't take off your seat belts just yet. Although the excitement of March Madness is over with, there is plenty basketball to look forward to this month. The NBA playoffs start on April 22, and we all know what that means. We will be hearing plenty of "oohs" and "ahhs" and they will have nothing to do with your significant other. In what is quite possibly one of the most exciting season's ever for the NBA, there is a heavy saturation of excellent teams that are capable of winning it all. It is obvious that the winner of the NBA Championship this season is not going to come out of the Eastern Conference. Although the Eastern Conference has a handful of dangerous teams, none can compare to those of the Western Conference. Let's face it, the East is ground beef while the West is filet mignon. The Western Conference is loaded with more weapons than Tony Montana himself. Obviously, the Los Angeles Lakers are favored to win the title this season. The Lake Show is led by "The Big Continuous" Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. The question we all want to know is, are the Lakers going to bring the title back to Los Angeles or are they going to choke harder than Lucca Brazzi in Godfather I. The Portland Trail Blazers, who have been recognized as the leagues best team by many, will be one of the toughest teams to beat in the playoffs. With players like Rasheed Wallace and Scottie Pippen, they seem almost too deep a team to be beaten. Who can ever forgot about the Utah Jazz? I can. Utah is playing great basketball right now but the Jazz can't beat the Lakers nor the Trail Blazers in a seven-game series. Personally, I have never seen a Jazz fan outside of Utah. If there are any, it would be nice to flaunt your "Mailman" jersey's around campus during the playoff's. Another team that no one gives any credit are the San Antonio Spurs, with Sean Elliott back in the lineup, they are very dangerous. The only thing people seem to talk about right now is how Tim Duncan is a free agent at the end of the season. Most likely Duncan will end up playing for either Chicago or Orlando, but as for now, he plays for the Spurs so look out. One can give props to Kevin Johnson too, for coming out of retirement but let's be honest here, K.J. and the Suns aren't going to win a championship, so if you want to own a championship ring, get out of Phoenix. If there was one thing that is clear about this year's playoffs, it's that nothing is clear.
