Talk about this story

Tuition is one of the many hurdles every UA student must leap over each semester.

For some with wealth on their side, this hurdle is easily traversed. For the rest, though, they need a leg up, either in the form of scholarships or student loans.

Now, the hurdle is going to get a little higher.

On April 5, the Arizona Board of Regents approved an $84 tuition increase for in-state students, and a $388 increase for out-of-state students. This move has been criticized by student representatives and by the infamous State Rep. Jean McGrath R-Glendale.

The state university presidents said the money would go towards teacher salaries, increasing technology and building renovations, while the students really have no say in where this extra money will be spent.

Wildlife decided to give the students a chance to speak their mind. The students were asked what the money from the tuition increase should go towards.

"I think it should go towards programs to clean up the campus. I think the campus can make the (UA Mall) look a little better. I think that it could help out students who need help with money, stuff like that - just go back to the students, help them in some little way."
John Lind
finance sophomore
"I think that the money should go to help programs like Camp Wildcat, which is not funded very well by ASUA. I think that it should go back to students also through more scholarships offered through the U of A - there are a lot of them but there is not enough for a lot of students here."
Blaire Pace
finance sophomore
"I think the money should go toward lessening the price of the books, because the books are pretty expensive - and it would be really nice to have cheaper books. Maybe also, we could get more money for selling books back, especially when they are in really good condition."
Julie Odesky
communications freshman
"I think it should be an increase in pay salary for a lot of the teachers and professors here at the U of A because I don't think they are paid enough to stay here. For us to continue to be a good university, we need to have the top professors and pay them good."
Cristin Carey
psychology sophomore
"I think (money should go to) faculty. I think it's needed for faculty pay raises so we can stay competitive. I don't want to sound racially offensive, but some math teachers just can't speak English and it makes it hard to learn. I think it's kind of widespread."
Mike Read
computer engineering senior
