Talk about this story

University police arrested a man Thursday after he didn't pay a taxi driver for his fare, police reports stated.

The taxi driver flagged down an officer after Richard Gonzalez, 43, of the 4300 block of South Sixth Avenue, took the taxi home at about 3:20 a.m. but didn't have any money to pay for the ride, reports stated.

The driver said when he dropped Gonzalez off at 890 E. Drachman St., Gonzalez said he didn't have any money but offered a small gold earring for the ride, reports stated.

The driver told the officer that because of previous situations like this one, he took the earring and decided to contact an officer.

He also told the officer Gonzalez offered him some crack cocaine for the ride, but he refused that, reports stated.

The officer told the driver to pick Gonzalez up where he saw him walking on North Euclid Avenue and East Speedway Boulevard and the officer would conduct a fake traffic stop and speak with Gonzalez about the incident, reports stated.

The driver went to where he saw Gonzalez, picked him up again and the officer stopped the taxi to speak with Gonzalez.

When the officer spoke with Gonzalez, he noticed the man was dazed, glassy-eyed and semi-disoriented, reports stated.

The officer also noticed a burn on Gonzalez's lip that is consistent with the use of crack cocaine, reports stated.

The officer searched the cab and found a glass vial/pipe that is also consistent with the use of crack cocaine and asked Gonzalez if it was his, reports stated.

Gonzalez denied ownership of the glass tube and the cab driver said he hadn't looked in the back of his cab since earlier in the evening, reports stated.

The officer did not cite Gonzalez for possession of drug paraphernalia because he had no contraband on him and because of the cab driver's statement to the officer, reports stated.

Gonzalez was cited on suspicion of theft of services, taken to Pima County Jail and released by pre-trial services.

A UA employee called UAPD Thursday after someone caused damage to her car while it was parked in a UA parking garage, reports stated.

The woman said she parked her car in the Cherry garage, 1641 E. Enke Dr., at about 1 p.m. Wednesday and when she returned to it at about 5:45 p.m., she noticed a large dent in her 1999 Toyota Camry.

The woman told police she didn't remember what other cars were parked near hers and there was no paint transfer on her car, nor was there paint removed from the car.

She also told police she didn't call Wednesday because she wasn't sure if the UAPD Station was open.

No further evidence was found at the scene.

A UA student spoke with an officer Wednesday after someone stole his CatCard from a room in a UA residence hall, reports stated.

The man said he was doing laundry at Yavapai Residence Hall, 1222 E. South Campus Dr., at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday when he left his laundry basket with his CatCard in the laundry room, reports stated.

He returned to get his laundry at about 1:15 p.m. and he noticed his CatCard was missing from the basket.

He told police there was no one in the room when he started his wash nor when he returned to get it.

A UA student called police Thursday after someone stole parts from his bicycle while it was parked near a UA building, reports stated.

The man said he parked his bike near the Maroney Theater, 1025 N. Olive Dr., at about 11:45 a.m. and when he returned at about 12:45 p.m., he noticed the ends of his handlebars had been stolen.

The black carbon-fiber handlebar ends are valued at an estimated $70, reports stated.

The student said he didn't see anyone suspicious near his bike when he left it or when he returned to it.
